特に人気なのがオージーボール、クリケット、２種類のラグビー
他にもサーフィンやゴルフを始め数多くの大会が開かれています
そんな中でサッカーは苦しい戦いを強いられてきました
でもそんな歴史にも遂にピリオドが打たれようとしています

「オージーボールやラグビー、クリケット等ライバルが多くて大変ですよ。気候の問題もありますしねぇ。でもサッカー人口は１２０万人ですから。ゲームを見たいと思っている人は居るんです。ただ今までは見る物がありませんでした」
そう話すのがオーストラリアサッカー連盟でCEOを勤めるジョンオニール
会長は国内第2位の資産家、フランク・ローウィー（frank lowy）です
２００３年オニールは再建計画の一環としてＮＳＬを解体
８つのクラブで新リーグをスタートさせる事にしました
Aリーグでは一つの都市にクラブは一つ
オーストラリアの７つとニュージーランドのオークランドに一つ
５００万オーストラリアドルのサラリーキャップも設けられています
そしてマーキープレーヤー（Marquee player）枠で観客を呼べる選手を一人獲得出来ます
ケビンマスカット（Kevin Muscat）の様に最近までヨーロッパで活躍していたベテランを加えたチームもあります
それとは対照的な方針を取っているクラブがクイーンズランド・ロアー（QUEENSLAND ROAR ）です

「未来のある選手に目を向けた方がいいと思うんです。アカデミー出身の才能ある若者に注目すべきですよ。今後に期待出来ますしこの国の事情も良く分かっています。ベテランよりも若手に力を入れるつもりです」

アメリカ同様サッカーをしている子供の割合はかなり高いオーストラリア
将来に向けては良い傾向ですが、当面の問題はこの地でプロリーグが成長していけるかと言うことです
ヨークの移籍は大きな話題となっています
連日地元のニュースに取り上げられ、リーグの平均入場者数も1万２０００人
前身のNSL時代の３倍です
ラグビーとオージーボールのシーズンも終わりに近づき、サッカーにとってはこれからがアピールのチャンス
大事なのはプレーの質、マーキープレーヤーの責任は重大です

「勿論それは良く分かっています。でも結局はここの人達がゲームに来て、Aリーグや選手を応援してくれるかどうかの問題なんです。スタンドが半分しか埋まっていなかったら選手もガッカリですよ。だから僕達を応援に来て欲しいと思っていますし、選手の方も良いプレーでお客さんを楽しませなければいけません」
開幕前のプレシーズントーナメントで優勝したのはセントラル・コースト・マリナーズ（Central Coast Mariners）
シーズン開幕からは４試合で７ポイントを獲得しています
上位４チームまでに入ればファイナルシリーズへの出場権が与えられ、その４チームで優勝を争うというスタイルを取っています

Dwight Yorke is the most celebrated player to ever sign an extended contract in Australian football history. The former Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa striker signed for Sydney FC as the marquee player from Birmingham City. He is the seventh highest goalscorer in the history of the English Premier League and has winners medals from the FA Cup, the English Premier League and the European Champions League. His credentials are second to none in the Hyundai A-League. Yorke was the final player brought into the Sydney FC roster and he is certain to form a deadly strikeforce with Australian marksmen David Zdrilic and Saso Petrovski. Pierre Littbarski
Head Coach
Pierre Littbarski came to Australia with anrivalled playing record and is undoubtedly one of the most respected football figures to ever be involved with the game in Australia. Three times a World Cup finalist, he has held the World Cup trophy aloft as a player with Germany. He was the first man to play in three consecutive World Cup finals and his stature as a player is first class. As a coach he began his career where he finished his playing days in Japan and has also had a brief stint as an assistant coach in Germany with Beyer Leverkusen in the Bundasliga. Littbarski had instant success with Sydney FC, taking them through to the Club World Championship by winning the Australian and then the Oceania Championships.
