その一人がブライアン・チンです

「ハワイ育ちですし、父親がワイキキビーチで働いていたので、僕も夏はずっとビーチに居ました。それに母親の家がノースショアに面していたので、サッカーのピッチより海で過ごした時間の方が長かったと思いますよ。ハワイで好きだった物、恋しいと思うものは海とサーフィンなんです。ある意味身体に染み付いていますから、そのうちハワイに戻って暮らしたいとそう思っています」
今の所はスパイクを履いての生活を満喫
ハワイ出身者としてチンは初めてのアメリカ代表です
２００４年にはＭＬＳの得点王になり、サンノゼ・アースクェイクスのＭＶＰにも選ばれました
ヒューストン・ダイナモと変わった今シーズンもウエスタン・カンファレンスの上位につけ、プレイオフ出場が濃厚です

「こないだも本人に言っていたんですが、うちのファン・ニステルローイですよ。ゴールへの嗅覚を持っていて、エリア内にボールが入るといつも彼が居るんです。ヘッドも足元も上手くてゴール前では相手チームにとって脅威ですよ。何時も相手に競り勝って、ボールをキープしてくれるのでコンビを組むには最高ですよ」

「素晴らしい選手ですよ。ＭＬＳには珍しくポストプレーが出来るタイプなんです。相手のプレッシャーもかなりあるのにやり返す事はありませんね。練習には必死に取り組んでゴール前ではクレバーな動きをしています。年齢的にもこれからがピークですし、今シーズンも１３試合で１０ゴールは立派です。チームにおける自分の役割も良く分かっています。ただ能力を最大限に発揮する意味で、本人がもっと高いレベルに挑戦したいと思えばそこでもしっかりと結果を出せるはずですよ」
２００３年にチームの一員になったチン
今シーズンチームはサンノゼから３０００ｋｍ離れたテキサスへと本拠地を移し、ヒューストン・ダイナモとして生まれ変わりました
メンバーはサンノゼ時代と殆ど同じです
海からはさらに遠く離れてしまいましたがピッチの中でも外でも順調な様子です

「移転してからの事は想像出来ませんでしたが、最初のゲームから２万５千人が集まって大声援を送ってくれたんです。本当にありがたかったですし、ここのサポーターは最高ですね。ヒューストンへ来て良かったと皆が思っています。唯一困っているのが、気候の問題でちょっと暑い時があるんですがそれ以外は言う事無しです」
２８歳のエースもチームもホームでの開幕戦では最高のスタートをきりました
チンは４ゴール、５対２でコロラド・ラピッツに大勝します
その後のチームはやや安定感を欠きましたが、２００１年と２００３年にサンノゼとしてメジャーリーグサッカーで優勝した様に、ヒューストンでも栄冠を狙っています

「ホームでの開幕戦で４ゴール出来たのは凄く嬉しかったですよ。それもあってサポーターも僕らを暖かく迎えてくれたんですよね。あんな活躍が出来るなんて自分でもビックリでしたけど、１００％の力を出し切ってプレーしようとは思っていました。新天地で新しいサポーターと一緒にスタートを切るということで皆の気持ちも充実して、チーム全体がとても良いプレーでしたしね」
代表デビューは２００３年５月のウェールズ戦
ハワイ出身のプレーヤーとして初めての快挙でした
ドイツワールドカップでも２３人の登録メンバーに入りましたが出場のチャンスはありませんでした
代表チームも１分２敗、グループリーグで敗退します

「個人的にはピッチに立てなくて少しガッカリでした。ワールドカップでメンバーに選ばれたのに、プレー出来なかったら誰だってそう思いますよ。しかもチームの出来も良くなかったんですからね。自分が出ていたら何か出来たんじゃないかってどうしても考えます。でも全体としては素晴らしい経験でしたし、代表の一員になれて良かったです」
イングランドのフルハムに所属するブライアン・マクブライドが代表引退した事でチンはその後継者の候補にあがっています
リーグ１６試合で１０ゴールは、１試合平均のゴール数ではトップ
ハワイに居る家族や友達も誇りに思っているでしょう

「自分では良く判りませんけど、親善大使だって思ってくれている人も居るみたいです。もう少し頻繁にハワイに戻れる様に努力して、本当に親善大使になってハワイの子供達に夢を与えられれば良いですね。ハワイのサッカー少年にとって将来がイメージしにくい事が一番のマイナスなんです。こっちでは必死でプレーしていれば自ずと道が開けますからね」
ハワイの子供達にサーフィンよりもサッカーを好きになって貰うのはかなり難しい事かもしれません
それでも両立出来る人がいる

Brian Ching is ready for the 2006 season and to put a difficult 2005, that saw him miss 15 games with a hamstring injury behind him. The only Hawaiian MLS player hopes to be healthy and return to his league-leading 12-goal form of 2004, where he was named to the RadioShack MLS Best XI team. Despite significant time on the sideline, Ching managed to score seven goals and register five assists in just 11 starts in 2005. One of the biggest and toughest forwards in the league, the U.S. National Team player is prepared to lead the Quakes offense and retain his place as one of the premier scoring threats in MLS in 2006.MLS Experience

2003: Ching made his first appearance for the U.S. National team on May 26 vs. Wales at Spartan Stadium, entering as a substitute in the 75th minute.
