カナダのバンクーバー・ホワイトキャップスの過去と現在。

太平洋への入り口で、暮らしたい街のランキングで常に上位に入るバンクーバー
公共サービス、交通機関、教育、住居、そして景観の美しさの部門で高得点をマークします

この街は１７９２年にここを探検したイギリスのジョージ・バンクーバー（George Vancouver）提督の名を取ってバンクーバーと名が付きました

人口は２百万人余り、カナダで３番目に大きな都市です
ここはサッカーとも縁の深い都市です
一年中を通してサッカーがプレー出来る穏やかな気候で、２０世紀にやってきたイギリスからの移民がサッカーの基盤を作りました

ホワイトキャップスは１９７４年に創設され、７９年にはカナダのクラブとしては２番目となる北米サッカーリーグタイトルを獲得
当時平均観客数は２万８千人もいましたが、８４年の北米サッカーリーグの消滅と共に解散
復活したのは２００１年です

「新たに生まれ変わったホワイトキャップスには魅力的な部分が幾つかあります。その一つが私の後ろに見えるバンクーバーのダウンタウンに新スタジアムを建設する計画です。ナショナルトレーニングセンターを作る構想もあります。何処に建設するかは現在、自治体等と交渉中でです」

ホワイトキャップスは北米サッカーリーグの２部に当たるＵＳＬ（ユナイテッド・サッカー・リーグ）でプレーしています

「カナダの方がアメリカよりも少し先を行っていますね。立場が逆転したのはつい最近の事です。トロントＦＣがメジャーリーグサッカーに参加した事や、モントリオールやバンクーバーの成功がカナダのサッカーを成長させてくれています。新スタジアムも完成しますし、Ｕ−２０ワールドカップもカナダで開催されます。カナダのサッカーは良い方向へと向かっています」

現在ＵＳＬでプレーするカナダのクラブはホワイトキャップスを含む２チーム
トロントＦＣはＭＬＳでプレーしています
今後も多くのクラブをＵＳＬへと送り出し、最終的にはカナダリーグの開幕へと繋げたい所です

「プロリーグがカナダのサッカーレベルを上げてくれる事は間違いありません。しかしそれ以上に大切なのは選手の育成です。それも組織的に選手を育成していかなければなりません。その為には今あるシステムを全て破壊して、１からスタートする覚悟は出来ています。何度でも構想を見直し、改める部分は改め計画を実行へと移していきたいと思っています。皆直に結果を求めてきますが、その様なやり方では上手くいくものも上手くはいきませんからね」

長期計画はお手の物のレナルダッジ
北米タイトルも７９年に獲得して以来、昨年まで辛抱強く待ち続けました

ホワイトキャップスはロチェスター・レイジング・リノス（Rochester Raging Rhinos）を３対０で破り、ＵＳＬのチームとしては初めてアウェーでタイトルを獲得
チームキャプテンはホワイトキャップスのユース出身です

「ホワイトキャップスはイングランドやオランダの下部リーグをずっとお手本にしてきました。そしてその長年の努力が今実りつつあります。トレーニング施設や若手育成プログラブ等がその良い例です」

バンクーバーは州とカナダサッカー協会が提携して選手の育成を手掛けるカナダ唯一のプロクラブで、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州一帯に１１の育成センターを構えています
このおかげでこの地域からは優秀な若手選手が沢山誕生しています

またホワイトキャップスの女子チームも２００６年の女子ＵＳＬで優勝しています

ホワイトキャップスは２００７シーズンも１２チームで戦うＵＳＬに参戦しています
開幕戦はシアトル・サウンダーズ（Seattle Sounders）をホームも迎え撃ち１対０で勝利
９試合を終えた所で首位に立っています

トロントＦＣに続いてＭＬＳへの昇格を計画するホワイトキャップス
その為にはウォーターフロントのスタジアム建設計画を実現しなければなりません

クラブのオーナー、グレッグ・カーフット（Greg Kerfoot）がクラブの発展に積極的なだけにクラブの未来は明るいようです

「これまで色々な夢はありましたが、どれも実現は難しそうな夢ばかりでした。でも今のオーナーが来てからはそれらの夢が実現可能になったんです。事実我々は今新スタジアムの建設についても話し合っています。それも山々や海を臨む事が出来るバンクーバーの市街に建設するというのです。夢の又夢の様な話ですね」

自治体との話し合いは進行中です
いずれはホワイトキャップス・ウォーターフロント・スタジアム（Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium）がカナダで２番目となるＭＬＳのスタジアムになるかもしれません
実現すればこの地域のサッカーレベルは益々アップする事でしょう

Career Highlights
Clarke, 28, enters his sixth season with the Caps and eighth in the league. The 5?9?, 165-pound native of New Westminster, BC, has played in 118 games for the Whitecaps, scoring nine goals and assisting on eight. Last year Clarke was named team captain and played in 25 games, collecting one goal and one assist in 2,011 minutes. Clarke was selected Vancouver?s Most Valuable Player in media voting in 2002, after finishing fourth in team scoring with six goals and five assists.
Clarke, who first joined the Whitecaps in 1997, spent two seasons in Europe, with St. Patrick's Athletic of Ireland?s Eircom League before returning to North America in 2000. After one year stints with the Hampton Roads Mariners and then the Portland Timbers, Clarke returned to Vancouver in 2002.
Clarke, a former captain with the SFU Clan, has 19 caps and one goal for the Canadian National Men?s Team. His only international goal came in a 1-0 exhibition win over Trinidad & Tobago on May 27, 2000. Clarke made his full national team debut at the age of 19 on August 17, 1997 against Iran. His most recent appearance was in Canada's 3-1 win over Switzerland on May 15, 2002 in St. Gallen. Clarke was also the captain of Canada?s 2000 Olympic Team, and the Canadian U-20 team that competed at the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championships in Malaysia.
As an amateur, Clarke played his youth soccer with Coquitlam's Metro Ford, winning three provincial and two Canadian championships.
Personal
Clarke recognizes that his status as a professional soccer player allows him to pass on his skills and experience to younger players. Clarke enjoys working with youth through his volunteer work at soccer camps and professional coaching. During the off-season Clarke married his long time fiancee Michelle.

Bob Lilley

Bio: Whitecaps head coach Bob Lilley enters his third year in Vancouver and tenth behind the bench of a United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) club; he has also coached five years in Hershey (1997-2001) and two in Montreal (2002-2003) prior to joining the Whitecaps in 2005.
Last year Lilley guided the Whitecaps to their first North American championship since 1979 (North American Soccer League - Soccer Bowl) when they defeated the Raging Rhinos 3-0 at PAETEC Park in Rochester. The milestone win was Lilley痴 first championship and the first time an USL-1 team won the title on the road.
Lilley is a two-time Coach of the Year, winning the award in his rookie season as coach with Hershey Wildcats in 1997, and again in 2003 with Montreal Impact; in 2005, his first year with the Whitecaps, he was a finalist for Coach of the Year. He is only the second two-time Coach of the Year recipient in league history, following Alan Hinton (1994-95 with the Seattle Sounders).
He has never had a losing season and has guided his teams into the playoffs all nine years. He led Montreal to the Eastern Conference title in 2003, and Hershey to the Northern Conference title in 2001. He also led Hershey to division titles in 1997 and 1999, and earned Montreal the fan-based Voyageurs Cup in 2002 and 2003 as the top team in Canadian interlocking play. Lilley has amassed an overall record of 163-88-40, counting U.S. Open Cup matches and nine years in the playoffs from 1997-2006.

The 41-year-old is the fifth head coach heading into the team's 21st season of play, following Bob Lenarduzzi (1987-1993), Carl Valentine (1994-1999), Dale Mitchell (2000-2001), and Tony Fonseca (2002-2004). Lilley becomes the team's first American coach, and the first coach never to have previously played for Vancouver.
Lilley was born on May 2, 1966 in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
