スター選手を抱えるニューヨークコスモスは、タイトルを獲得し人々を楽しませニューヨーカーをサッカーの虜にしました
ペレやベッケンバウアーをアメリカに呼んだ元北米サッカーリーグのコミッショナー、クライブ・トイ氏の話です

「コスモスはおそらく５、６年はニューヨークで最も人気のあるスポーツチームでした。野球やアメリカンフットボールもあったと言われるかもしれませんが勿論そうです。でもコスモスは短い期間ではありましたがニューヨークで一番大きな人気を得ていたんです。試合は毎回テレビ中継されましたし、新聞のスポーツ欄にも大きく取り上げられました。見に来る人も非常に多く、ジャイアンツスタジアムは常に超満員でチケットを取るのは至難の技でした」
しかし北米サッカーリーグは８４年に消滅
それ以来アメリカのサッカーがあれほど盛り上がった事はありません
９５年にはニューヨーク・ニュージャージー・メトロスターズがメジャーリーグサッカー、ＭＬＳのクラブとして発足
ローターマテウスやロベルト・ドナドーニ（Roberto Donadoni）がプレーしましたが、ブームと言われる程の効果は出ていません
この状況が変わる事を願っているのがアレクシー・ララス
アメリカで最も成功しセリエＡでもプレーした選手です
３６歳の彼は６月にメトロスターズのゼネラルマネージャーに就任
国内スポーツ界最年少の役員ですが、考えは大胆です

「健全な自尊心が無ければ成功等ありえません。私もその気持ちを持っています。どんな状況でも最善を尽くし最高のクラブにしたいです。時間さえ与えられればメトロスターズをアメリカで最初のスーパークラブに出来ます。スーパークラブとは強い上に世界中で知られているクラブの事です。そうなれば世界のどこかに住む８歳の少年がアメリカを見た時に一番にメトロスターズを思い浮かべる様になります」
実現する可能性は否定出来ません
ここ数年ヨーロッパの多くのトップクラブがニューヨークでプレシーズンツアーを実施
こうした試合は人気がありサッカーへの興味も高くなっています
ララスはメトロスターズが今のＭＬＳには無いビッグネームの選手を引きつけられれば、多くの観客を呼ぶ事が出来ると考えています

「人々は試合を見る為に入場料を払い、楽しみたいと思って来ています。ですから私達はスタジアムに行って試合を見たいと思わせる選手を生み出さなければなりません。観客はチームの勝利や成功を望んでいてつまらない選手の為にお金を払う人は居ないんです。それから魅力のある選手も必要です。どんなスポーツでもどのチームでもそういった選手がいります」
チームにはスタジアムも必要です
現在はジャイアンツスタジアムをアメリカンフットボールの２チームと共有しています
スタジアムの使用料は年間２０万ドル
平均入場者数１万４千人では採算がとれませんがこの状況も変わろうとしています
２００７年までにニュージャージー州ハリソン？に収容人数２万人のサッカー専用スタジアムが完成します

「以前はスタジアムがある場所と無い場所の違いが分かりませんでした。しかしスタジアムがあるとピッチの中でも外でも状況が変わります。経営の面でも試合の面でも非常に有利です。次の段階に上がる事も出来るのでサッカーだけで無く国内のスポーツ全体と競えます」
将来は期待出来そうですが今はどうなのでしょう
現在チームにはユーリ・ジョルカエフが所属しています
ジョルカエフは今シーズン９ゴールをマークしましたが残り３試合でチームは東地区５位
プレーオフ進出は難しそうです

「メトロスターズに加わった時、私は本当に驚かされました。それは選手のフィジカルのレベルが非常に高かったからです。ですから良い試合をする為には最高の状態にしておかなければなりません。自分のパフォーマンスに満足していますがチームはもう少し力を出せると良いと思っています。何故ならプレーオフが近いのにメトロスターズは出場に十分な勝ち点を取っていないからです。だから自分にも多くの要求を課していますし、他の選手からも試合で今まで以上の結果が出る様にして欲しいと言われています」
メトロスターズをアメリカ初のスーパークラブにすると考えるララス
現役時代にも先駆け的存在だった彼は、役員に成った今もチャレンジ精神旺盛です
